Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, today congratulated the AFL and Recognise for promoting awareness of constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians, as part of this year’s Indigenous Round.
“It is particularly appropriate that on this day, the anniversary of the 1967 referendum, that the AFL and Recognise team-up to promote the growing movement to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution,” the Minister said.
“The AFL has long been a strong supporter of Indigenous people, recognising not only the valuable contribution of so many Indigenous players to the competition, but the important role of Indigenous Australians in the life of Australia.
“In this week’s Round 11, the Recognise campaign will be fully integrated into pre-match activity at the Dreamtime match as well prominently on the AFL Record and AFL website.
“This partnership between the AFL and Recognise is a great opportunity to build support for constitutional recognition during a period that is a huge celebration of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians coming together through football.”
