Marthakal News - Christmas message

Christmas is a time when people all over the world get together with friends and family. In the tropical north of Australia, we often celebrate Christmas during Gunmul, which is why housing is so important.

We all know many people will be coming into town to celebrate Christmas at this time of year from the outstations because of Gunmul, and living conditions can get very crowded. It’s a shame that many of the houses the Government promised for Elcho Island have not been built yet and I share the frustration many people in Galiwin'ku are feeling about how long it’s taking.

Congratulations to the talented young artists from Shepherdson College who had their artworks on display at the Miny’tji Exhibition in Sydney at the beginning of October. You follow in the footsteps of the many accomplished artists from Elcho Island and I encourage you to build on your success.

I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and hope that Santa brings you just what your heart desires.
