Indigenous Affairs Minister, Nigel Scullion, has paid tribute to well respected Ngemba woman from Brewarrina, Ms Barker, who passed away yesterday.
“’Aunty Jen‟ as she was affectionately known, was a highly respected member of the Brewarrina community and forged many enduring working partnerships, earning her great respect with the Australian and NSW Governments,” Minister Scullion said.
“Jenny‟s strong advocacy for Aboriginal people over many years and her efforts to make her beloved Brewarrina a more positive and safe place to live will always be remembered.”
Ms Barker was an active member of the community, serving as a councillor on the Brewarrina Shire Council.
She also chaired the Brewarrina Community Working Party and was Chairperson of the Board of the Brewarrina Business Centre.
“Jenny was a passionate advocate for Aboriginal affairs and reconciliation in western NSW and worked closely with other prominent Aboriginal leaders over many years,” Minister Scullion said.
“I extend my sincere condolences to Ms Barker‟s family and friends.
“The Brewarrina community has lost a strong advocate and a great Australian.”
