“Trish Crossin and Warren Snowdon’s betrayal of the people of the Northern Territory is now signed into law with the passing of the carbon tax,” the Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said.
“This is the blackest day in our democracy.
“Senator Crossin and Mr Snowdon campaigned on no carbon tax, as did all Labor MPs and Senators, after the Prime Minister uttered words that will go down in history as the worst betrayal in Australian’s political history: ‘There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead.’”
“Labor desperately clung to power and bowed to the extremist Greens, who also want to implement no-go fishing zones in the Territory, to push through a carbon tax that will hit vital industries in the Territory including mining, tourism and agriculture, and on the hip pockets of Territorians with higher power and fuel costs and grocery prices.
“The Carbon Tax will be a toxic tax on remoteness that will hurt the Northern Territory.
“The further you are away from the capital cities the more you will pay.
“Senator Crossin has backed damaging the Territory’s economy and this tax on everything, with the weakest reasoning I have ever seen in trying to justify her support and her betrayal of Territorians who voted for her.
“Trish Crossin has said, ‘I don’t know what we are worried about. If you get a truck that goes from Sydney to Melbourne it is only another 35 bucks or 7c a litre. It is nothing.’
“Anybody who lives in Darwin or elsewhere in the Territory will say that it is going to be an inordinately worse issue if you are trying to purchase fuel in Darwin.
“The Greens live in a fantasy world where jobs will magically appear out of thin air from the alternative energy sector, most of which are nowhere near ready to have the capacity to power this country or provide jobs.
“The real impact will be in remote and rural parts of Australia like the NT where mining, farming and tourism will bear the cost and transport and freight costs will skyrocket.
“We stand by our ironclad notice to Territorians that should the Coalition form the next government we will repeal this destructive tax,” Senator Scullion said.
