Labor Senator Trish Crossin is failing to stand up for the Northern Territory after she supported the Federal Government’s marine parks plan that will lock up NT waters, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said.
“I was just gob smacked to hear Senator Crossin, a fellow Territorian, stand up in the Senate Chamber yesterday and offer up a ‘Dorothy Dix’ question to her own minister to allow him to try and justify this hoax,” Senator Scullion said.
“How can she possibly back a plan that the entire Territory commercial and recreational fishing industry is against?
“Surely Senator Crossin can’t support this marine park in NT waters that are both the most pristine and well managed fisheries in the world.
“She is failing in her duty as a Senator for the Northern Territory by not standing up for fishing but has instead chosen to stand with an awful government.
““I was at the fishing rally in November last year at Stokes Hill Wharf and promised to fight this ludicrous decision and I will continue to do so but I cannot understand why Senator Crossin won’t join me in this fight.
“The Coalition supports marine protection that is based on science and developed in consultation with the community.
“The Government’s marine reserves network is not based on science, and consultation has been a farce.
“This is not consultation – this is a take it or leave it approach with no consideration for Australia’s coastal communities.
“A Coalition government would appoint a science-based panel to review all boundaries in all zones.
The marine parks network must be based on science and developed in consultation with the community, not just pandering to the Greens and environmental groups as Environment Minister Tony Burke and Senator Crossin have done,” Senator Scullion said.
