Joint Media Release with Western Australia Minister for Emergency Services The Hon Joe Francis MLA
The Australian and Western Australian Governments have jointly launched a breakthrough programme designed to increase the number of Indigenous firefighters.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and Western Australia Emergency Services Minister, Joe Francis, said today that combined funding of more than $677,000 would be invested through the Aboriginal Firefighter Cadetship Programme.
“This innovative programme will equip Indigenous cadets with the skills and knowledge required to successfully apply to enter the highly competitive Firefighter Recruit School,” Minister Scullion said.
“The Aboriginal Firefighter Cadetship Programme, is partly supported through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy’s – Jobs, Land and Economy Programme and will bolster Indigenous employment opportunities in Western Australia.”
Mr Francis said existing firefighter recruitment drives were only attracting a small number of Indigenous applicants.
“This programme is a significant step in the right direction and one that I am confident will have a positive effect on our workforce and the wider community,” Mr Francis said.
“Cadets will be employed full time for a year and be provided with on-the-job training and experience as well as a personalised fitness schedule.
“Aboriginal recruits completing this programme will have the chance to serve the people of Western Australia through this highly challenging but also extremely rewarding career in fire and rescue services.
“The Western Australia Government is committed to increasing its Aboriginal workforce to better reflect the diversity of the community that they serve. Applications are now open for a 12-month cadetship for potential recruits and I strongly encourage Aboriginal people to apply.”
The course will include practical and theoretical components with a focus on essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, physical fitness and communication.
Applications for the 2015 programme are open until 20 October 2014. For more information on how to apply, visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au/registerme.
