The Indian Ocean Territories Community Development Grants Programme 2014 gave the communities of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands the opportunity to access up to $1.5 million in grant funding in 2013–14.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Senator for Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said all funding agreements under the programme had been signed and all federal payments made.
“This funding will support community organisations and events, arts and culture, sports, the environment, education, health, emergency services and utilities in the Indian Ocean Territories,” Senator Scullion said.
“The Australian Government awarded funding support to 31 projects, many of which have now commenced with the initial stages of planning and purchasing equipment and materials and a couple of which are already complete.
Senator Scullion said the 30th Anniversary of Self Determination on Cocos (Keeling) Island, which took place on 6 April 2014, had been supported with a $36,300 grant.
“With only limited access to formal records of history on the Island, this event provided the community the chance to celebrate the unique culture and traditions of the Cocos Malay and the work undertaken to achieve self-determination,” he said.
“As a part of the Self Determination celebrations, there were historically and culturally significant performances, a traditional Cocos (Keeling) Islands arts and crafts display, and a fireworks display.
“Also complete is Night Vision for Boat Crew Project which involved the purchase of night vision goggles for the Christmas Island Volunteer Marine Search and Rescue Association.
“Australian Government funding of $10,000 for this project will continue to support work and rescue operations in the waters surrounding Christmas Island.”
The residents of Indian Ocean Territories will experience increased benefits as another 29 projects are completed over the next 12 months.
Projects funded will support economic development and provide long term improvements in community infrastructure.
