It may come as a surprise to hear that Tanya Plibersek’s department – Department of Health, reads every newspaper in the country – except the NT News.
Last financial year the department spent nearly $50,000 on newspaper and magazine subscriptions. It included a long list which featured, among others, ‘Harvard Business Review’, ‘Well at Work’ and ‘Liquor Merchants’, but left off the NT News.
Senator Nigel Scullion, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, said it should be mandatory for every Government Minister and Department to be monitoring the events of the Northern Territory, especially the Health Department and Minister Plibersek.
“Territorians face unique health issues – particularly those associated with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that make up 30% of our population – NT News should be required reading for all policy makers,” Senator Scullion said..
“The Coalition supports cost cutting measures, especially in the public service. These however should not be done at the expense of departments knowing what is happening in the Northern Territory and understanding the concerns of those outside main cities.
“Both Labor prime ministers have ignored the regions, and only the Coalition will correct that if elected on September 7.”
