Part of Nigel’s role as Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs is to hold the Government to account on the promises it has made to Indigenous Australians. We have compiled a list which shows the Government’s progress on fulfilling these promises, with some items hyperlinked to additional information.

Report to the Parliament on the progress made on closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians on the first working day of every year (promise broken, twice)

Housing

	Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Project - 750 new houses, 230 rebuilds, 2,500 refurbishments (promise stalled)
	Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Project – will infrastructure be included? (promise broken)
	Alice Springs Transformation Plan – work on 85 new houses will start at the beginning of 2010 (promise stalled)Establish a National Policy Commission to develop innovative proposals to improve the provision of housing in remote Indigenous communities (promise stalled)

Health

	Reduce the gap in the life expectancy of Indigenous Australians (promise stalled)
	Develop a comprehensive, long-term plan of action to achieve equality of health status and life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians (promise stalled)
	Tackle high rates of smoking in Indigenous communities (promise underway)

Education

	Build three Indigenous boarding facilities in the Northern Territory. Nearly three years on, only one site has been confirmed, at a location where Yolgnu do not want it (promise broken)
	Halve the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievements for Indigenous children – My Schools website indicates all remote schools in the Northern Territory where most students are Indigenous, except for Katherine School of the Air, are well below the national standard (promise broken)
	Build 260 childcare centres at schools – three built in two years (promise stalled)
