The Labor Government’s recent economic statement forecasts slower economic growth and higher unemployment, which will have a huge negative impact on Indigenous communities, Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Senator Nigel Scullion said.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people depend on a good economy for their wellbeing like other Australians and the economy is a Coalition strength.
“The Coalition will protect and grow our economy – our plan is to get the budget back under control, pay back debt, lower taxes and help small business create jobs.
“Many Aboriginal people already live in communities with the highest jobless rates in the country and Labor’s appalling handling of the economy is having a negative impact.
“We need a strong national economy to encourage business and jobs growth in regional areas, including remote indigenous communities.
“This can’t and won’t happen under Labor. Since the budget in May there has been a $33 billion deterioration in the Budget’s bottom line, or $3 billion a week.
“Labor has a terrible record on indigenous employment and has created feel good welfare programs with no long term job prospects in sight for Indigenous Australians.
“The Coalition will end training for training’s sake – our Indigenous training programs will come with a guaranteed job at the end.
“A stronger economy will benefit Indigenous Australians with more job and business opportunities – something only the Coalition can deliver,” Senator Scullion said.
