Coalition delivering more money for Territory schools … just ask Minister Lawler

The Gunner Government has admitted the Coalition’s real needs-based schools funding model will deliver more money for Northern Territory schools.

Northern Territory Education Minister Eva Lawler has admitted in an interview with ABC RN Breakfast this morning that Territory schools will receive more funding over the next decade under this Coalition Government.

When asked by the interviewer, Hamish Macdonald, whether Territory schools would be better off under the Coalition’s funding model, Minister Lawler said: ‘We are getting more money.’

Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said Minister Lawler had argued on radio for more money for Territory schools despite not knowing how much the Coalition’s funding plan actually provides for NT schools.

“I am happy to help out Minister Lawler. Northern Territory schools will receive an additional $83 million in annual funding by 2021,” Senator Scullion said.

“Additional funding for NT schools will hit $262.6 million by 2027.

“The Coalition Government will provide $4.8 billion to support Territory schools over 10 years. In addition, there is a further $35.6 million for the Northern Territory to accelerate evidence-based reforms to improve outcomes for vulnerable students.

“We’re delivering the real ‘Gonski’ needs-based funding model that Labor didn’t.

“Our plan factors in the background, family life, levels of disability and socioeconomic status of each student and school to ensure funding is truly needs-based and fair.

“We have outlined what our additional $18.6 billion would mean for every school, making that information publicly available at

“I note Minister Lawler has today met with the federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham. I hope she used the occasion to get her head around the details of the Coalition’s landmark Quality Schools reforms that will actually see record funding for Territory schools and provide a better education for Territory children.”
