More First Australians will have access to a high quality education as a result of $5 million investment by the Coalition Government to increase the number of scholarships offered by the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation (AIEF).
Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion, who recently approved the funding said the additional $5 million for the AIEF would deliver more scholarships to support more families and their children to meet the costs of an education at Australia’s leading schools or universities.
“The Coalition is using all possible levers to ensure Indigenous children have the opportunity to fulfil their full potential. That begins with being at school regularly to receive an education,” Senator Scullion, who was in Sydney to attend the launch of the AIEF Annual Report, said.
“There are too many young people disengaged, particularly in regional and remote parts of Australia and these additional funds will go some way to opening up more opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth and their families.
“The AIEF is one of many organisations the Coalition is investing in to support families and increase access, retention and completion of Indigenous students through education.
“We know that the AIEF delivers education outcomes for every dollar governments invest in it. Each year it supports over 500 students and it has consistently achieved a retention and Year 12 completion rate of more than 90 per cent.
“The Coalition’s investment also leverages further investment as under the AIEF model, every dollar of government investment is matched from philanthropic and private sources.
“Indigenous families no matter what their circumstance or where they live, should have access to the same educational options as other Australians.”
Following this additional investment, the Foundation will support over 3,000 scholarship places for students in 35 schools across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
The AIEF is a non-profit organisation providing school and university scholarships to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to build a future through quality education and careers.
The $5 million grant has been funded from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy.
