Joint Media Release with Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash
Freight and tourism infrastructure in the Northern Territory will be improved through two projects that have secured more than $1.2 million though the Coalition Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF).
Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the local projects funded under NSRF Round Three made a huge difference in their communities.
“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and quality local infrastructure is a big part of that,” Minister Nash said.
“Whether it’s cultural and healthcare facilities, tourism infrastructure or a great sports precinct, I’m proud to be delivering to the Northern Territory.
“Some 479 applications were lodged under Round Three – only the very best were successful.”
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said he was delighted two Territory projects had been successful under the NSRF’s third funding round.
“This is a great result for the Territory, considering this was such a hotly contested funding round,” Senator Scullion said.
“The Roper Gulf Regional Council will receive almost $1 million to improve freight infrastructure at Ngukurr and Numbulwar.
“The funding will go towards sealing sections of the Roper Highway in the two towns as well as lane widening, upgrading loading ramps, an undercover area for freight, storage area for fuel tanks and public bowers. It will also improve storm water drainage and truck parking and public car parking areas.
“East Arnhem Regional Council will receive $241,875 to redevelop the visitor accommodation at Gapuwiyak to provide ‘motel style’ rooms to facilitate tourism development.
“In a boost for the Arnhem Land economy, it is estimated that the construction spend will be up to $1.3 million and create up to 13 new jobs.”
