This week is Landcare Week and Northern Territory residents are being encouraged to celebrate and support their local Landcare groups and the important environmental and land management work they do.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said Landcare was now the largest environmental and land management movement in the country.
“National Landcare Week is the perfect time for us to reflect on the important work these groups undertake and the significant role the Landcare movement will continue to play for both our region and Australia,” Senator Scullion said.
“The work of Landcarers in the Northern Territory delivers real outcomes and makes a real difference, both in supporting the productivity of our farmers and better environmental outcomes.
“They promote an integrated, productive and sustainable approach to land management and this is important for the future of Australian agriculture.”
The Coalition Government has funded numerous projects in the Northern Territory under the National Landcare Programme this year, including:
• $19,320 for the Barkly Landcare and Conservation Association to support smarter farming;
• $24,442 for the Northern Territory Farmers Association to demonstrate integrated pest management techniques to tropical vegetable growers;
• $13,200 for the Northern Territory Farmers Association to improve the application of agricultural chemicals;
• $55,000 for the Centralian Land Management Association to build the capacity of land managers in soil conservation and rehabilitation works.
“I encourage everyone in Northern Territory to get on board with National Landcare Week and learn about the different work that our Landcare groups undertake,” Senator Scullion said.
“Through the National Landcare Awards, we all also have the opportunity to vote for our Landcare champions through the People’s Choice Award – so be sure to get your vote in.”
The Coalition Government has committed to providing $1 billion to the National Landcare Programme over the four years to 2017-18 to address national and local challenges to improving the condition of Australia’s natural resources.
