Vital work to resolve community disputes in Yuendumu and Willowra will be supported by an extension of mediation services in the communities for a further two years.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said he had recently approved funding of $870,000 until 2018 for the Yuendumu Mediation and Justice Committee.
“I am very impressed by the good work undertaken by the men and women on this committee, many of whom are community elders, and who have given up their time to keep the peace in Yuendumu and Willowra in recent years,” Senator Scullion said.
“The committee provides ongoing support to the communities through training and workshops to build mediation skills, knowledge and promote respectful relationships in order to reduce domestic and family violence.
“The committee has also helped to get more local kids to school through our Remote School Attendance Program and it’s important that programmes like this which are community-driven and which are making a real difference, continue.
“Improving community safety and getting more kids to school are two of the Coalition’s key priorities in Indigenous Affairs and the Yuendumu Mediation and Justice Committee has been helping us to achieve this in Yuendumu and Willowra.”
