Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, has welcomed today’s announcement of disaster assistance in response to the Daly River floods.
Visiting Daly River evacuees at the Darwin showgrounds, Senator Scullion said the assistance is being provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-Territory Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
“This is a significant flood event which has had a major impact on the Daly River community,” Senator Scullion said.
“The entire community has been evacuated to Darwin, and will likely have to stay there until the flood waters recede.”
“The community was relocated before the flood waters peaked and I’d like to thank all those involved in evacuating everyone safely. Mass evacuations are complex exercises involving both response and recovery operations.”
“The costs associated with this evacuation operation and temporary accommodation for the community in Darwin will also be covered under the NDRRA.”
“I met with Daly River residents who are being looked after at the showgrounds evacuation centre with food, clothing, medications and other personal items.
Through NDRRA also available is financial assistance for clean-up operations and to repair any damaged essential public assets and also to replace essential household contents in some circumstances.
Senator Scullion said the Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments will continue to monitor the impacts of the floods to ensure that all flood affected communities have the support they need to recover.
Information regarding the assistance available can be found on the Northern Territory Government’s emergency information and response website at www.securent.nt.gov.au and on the Australian Government’s Disaster Assist website at www.disasterassist.gov.au.
