Beanie-making workshops will be held in Ernabella, Fregon, Titjikala and Santa Teresa as part of this year’s Alice Springs Beanie Festival, thanks to a Federal Government grant of $25,000.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said the funding provided to event organiser Alice Springs Beanie Festival Inc would enable teachers to attend the communities for one to two weeks to pass on the art of beanie making and encourage participants to develop their own creative designs.
“The artists and their beanies will then travel to Alice Springs to exhibit their beanies and have the opportunity to sit with festival goers to teach them their new beanie-making skills and share their culture,” Senator Scullion said.
The Government funding came from the Festivals Australia programme that supports participation and audience engagement in local festivals and experiences.
Minister for the Arts, Mitch Fifield, said more than $750,000 had been committed to 18 projects to assist community members living in regional and remote Australia participate in or attend an arts driven-experience at a festival or community celebration.
