This week’s heavy rains and floods in Central Australia have caused extensive damage across the region and difficulty for local residents and tourists.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, has acknowledged the impact the floods have had on communities and towns across the region and urged residents to stay safe in the clean-up and any further rain events.
“The reports I am receiving about the damage to the community of Kintore are very concerning and I have sent a message of support to the residents who have been staying in the local school after flood damage meant they had to leave their houses,” Senator Scullion said.
“I appreciate the swift response of Northern Territory police and other emergency services and officials to support these residents during the flooding and now as the process of cleaning up and assessing damage commences.
“I also recognise the hard work of police and emergency services to locate motorists missing in the flood-affected areas.
“The great spirit of Territorians was on show as communities pitched in where possible and stayed strong together.
“The Coalition Government continues to monitor the impact of the floods and is ready to assist the Northern Territory Government to respond to the damage this emergency has caused.
“I am keen to see employment and training opportunities provided to local residents through flood-recovery works and will ensure the Coalition Government’s Community Development Programme is ready to support the works.
“Thankfully, the weather conditions have largely cleared. However, I urge everyone in flood-affected areas to stay safe and follow the advice and direction of emergency service authorities.”
