Joint Media Release with Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari, Tina MacFarlane
Indigenous Affairs Minister, Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, and Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari, Tina MacFarlane, announced a successful applicant from Central Australia for funding from the National Landcare Programme Sustainable Agriculture Small Grants Round 2015-16.
Senator Scullion and Ms MacFarlane said Centralian Land Management Association has been provided $55,000 in funding to manage a project that supports the Territory’s vibrant, innovative and competitive agriculture sector.
“The Creating Healthy Landscapes in Central Australia will build the capacity of land managers to plan and execute soil conservation and rehabilitation works using best practice methods, including the use of the Ecosystem Management Understanding (EMU) process,” Senator Scullion said.
Ms MacFarlane said this was a strong project that would achieve good outcomes for pastoral land management in central Australia.
“The EMU process includes a mapping process of properties with large aerial photos to assist with property management as well as flying over properties which will allow owners to view areas of land with issues as well as good production areas. The process also includes some conservation workshops,” Ms MacFarlane said.
“The Centralian Land Management Association has a good track record of project delivery and will cover both large areas of land and cater for a large number of farmers and it will be of significant public benefit to Central Australia.”
“This project, like others across the country, will help share knowledge and skills across the sector to boost farm productivity and protect the natural resources that our agricultural industries depend on.
Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Hinkler, Keith Pitt, said the Coalition was working closely with volunteer Landcare groups and farming organisations to strengthen the Landcare program and prioritise works where they can have greatest impact.
“The Small Grants Round is an important component of the National Landcare Programme, which ultimately delivers on the Coalition Government’s commitment to support profitable returns at the farm gate.”
“The Coalition’s strong investment of $1 billion over four years in the National Landcare Programme demonstrates our great commitment to support Landcare in Australia and ensure our lands remain a solid foundation for our agricultural sector.”
