The Gunner Government has seemingly blown the budget on the joint Federal-NT government funded Darwin indoor netball stadium, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said.
“Last week Minister Lauren Moss was spruiking that construction of the world class indoor netball stadium for Darwin is nearing completion with 70% of the project complete and that it was being delivered on budget.
“This project is an example of the Gunner Government’s terrible economic mismanagement as Laruen Moss’ claims it is being delivered on budget are fanciful – it is almost $2million over budget,” Senator Scullion said.
“The original cost for this project was $18 million with $8 million from the Federal Coalition Government and $10 million from the Northern Territory Government but in this latest release from Minister Moss the Gunner Government funding is now $11.8 million. In a release on July 23 Minister Moss still had $10 million listed as the NT Government investment so in two months Labor has blown the budget.
“The Gunner Government needs to explain to Territorians how it has blown the budget and where this extra taxpayers money from Territorians is coming from. Labor need to tell the truth – are any other projects having funds cut or will this be put on the credit card for Territorians to pay even more interest on Michael Gunner’s and Nicole Mansion’s already record debt?
“Northern Territory businesses are struggling in a downturn that the economically incompetent Chief Minister and NT Treasurer have created with their ham-fisted management of the economy. If you can’t run projects like this how can you be trusted to manage the NT economy, bring investment and jobs and balance the Territory’s books?
“I am pleased at the progress of this important project that the Coalition Government is contributing $8 million towards the new netball stadium.
“The Coalition Government is delivering on our election commitment to ensure Territorians will have a great new community asset that will allow the popular sport of netball to be played all year round and attract national and international events.
“This is a great investment in grassroots sport for the region and will encourage participation in netball, basketball and a range of other sports.”
The fully air-conditioned indoor netball facility, in the Marrara Sporting Complex, includes four national standard netball courts, seating, change rooms, food and corporate facilities and underground car park.
“It includes an international standard show court with 2000 seats and broadcast-standard lighting, showing the Top End has the facilities to host major national and international events and can also be used for events such as concerts.
“This netball facility would not be going ahead without the Coalition Government’s $8 million investment, of this there can be no doubt. I am sure that Territory netballers, who number over 4000 registered members in the NT, are getting excited to see this new facility nearing the finish line. This new netball stadium will help to make the sport even bigger and better.”
“This new indoor netball facility is a great example of the Country Liberals absolute commitment to ensuring Territorians have access to the same level of amenity as the rest of the country.”
“I am pleased to see Darwin-based Sunbuild won the tender for design and construction and over 100 people will be employed during construction, meaning more jobs for Territorians.
“What this investment demonstrates is the Federal Coalition’s strong commitment to delivering for all Territorians through initiatives like this as well as the $4.2 billion we are investing in Northern Territory services and infrastructure this year.”
