A desperate Michael Gunner has misled Territorians and also demonstrated his total lack of understanding of his own responsibilities when it comes to alcohol policy.
The gaffe prone Chief Minister was on ABC Radio Darwin on Monday claiming that the Federal Government was responsible for handing out liquor licenses in the NT, and then also claimed that I had Alcohol Management Plans on my desk waiting to be signed.
On Adam Steer’s Morning show on Monday 22 October, the Chief Minister said:
The Australian Government’s blocking that (in reference to social clubs in communities). They’ve got that power until 2022. We can’t do anything until we get that power back. We have got a policy to do that based off communities wanting to have it back. Some communities actually have an active plan to manage alcohol in their communities with their community club. I would absolutely love to do that, but Minister Scullion, right now, is blocking that.
So he’s got Alcohol Management Plans sitting on his desk that he’s not signing.
On both counts he is categorically wrong and I have written to him seeking an urgent correction.
In fact I have not received an Alcohol Management Plan since 2015 after which I handed over responsibility for this to the NT Government.
Territorians won’t be surprised by the embattled Chief Minister’s latest gaffe given he has made a complete dogs breakfast of alcohol policy in the Territory.
Under Michael Gunner alcohol related harm and violence is on the up and up, the Banned Drinkers Register is a complete and utter failure, the alcohol minimum floor price has turned into an unmitigated shemozzle and it seems this Labor Government is avoiding adopting the former CLP Government’s proven and effective policies at all costs.
This of course follows the bizarre ineptitude Gunner demonstrated during the whole Dan Murphy’s crisis.
It is surely well past time that Territory Labor put this failed Chief Minister out to pasture.
Territorians deserve better.
