Joint Media Release with Minister for Regional Services, Sport, Local Government and Decentralisation Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie and Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari Jacinta Nampijinpa Price
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, and CLP Candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, have welcomed the announcement of $200,000 into NT sporting infrastructure as part of the second $30 million round of the Coalition Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program.
“The Katherine Town Council will receive the$200,000 funding towards upgrades at the Katherine sportsgrounds,” Senator Scullion said.
“This investment demonstrates the Federal Coalition’s strong commitment to delivering better community infrastructure for Territorians. This announcement builds on the $4.2 billion we are already investing in Northern Territory services and infrastructure this year.”
Ms Price said sport played an important role across the Territory and the benefits of this CLP investment in the Katherine facilities will be felt right across the town.
“This is a wonderful investment in grassroots sport for the Katherine region and will encourage participation in sports and getting Territorians out and active,” Ms Price said.
“I am sure Katherine residents will enjoy their improved sporting facilities.”
Katherine Mayor Fay Miller said the injection of $200,000 from the Federal Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Grants program was highly welcomed by Katherine Town Council.
“We are already well engaged with major NT funded infrastructure revitalisation projects across Katherine and this additional funding, specifically for our sporting oval, will enable the provision of a truly first class playing field for the many deserving sporting groups in Katherine. It allows us to rebuild and resurface the playing field, as well as redesign and replace the existing irrigation system, to a much higher standard,” Mayor Miller said.
“It is a very exciting time for us and we thank the Federal Government for providing this greatly appreciated funding boost to Katherine and its sporting fraternity.”
Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie, said the government understands the importance of local sport.
“The Coalition Government understands that our success and prowess as a sporting nation begins with grassroots sports, which is why we have focused our investment on local grassroots sporting facilities such as the Darwin Basketball Association,” Minister McKenzie said.
“As outlined in the National Sports Plan, Sport 2030, grassroots sports help drive increased participation and promote social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport – a key priority for our government.”
