Joint Media Release with Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari Jacinta Price
- $326,450 for Katherine oral health under round two of the Building Better Regions Fund Community Investment stream
- 136 projects will be funded under the Infrastructure Projects stream, with the Coalition Government investing over $200 million
Oral health in Katherine is set to receive a boost following the announcement of a successful project under the Building Better Regions Fund – Infrastructure Projects stream.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, and CLP Candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, said the project was a significant investment in improving health services for the Katherine region.
“This is a fantastic outcome for Katherine, with Wurli Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation receiving a $326,450 investment towards the construction of a dental and oral health facility,” Senator Scullion said.
Ms Price said funding for the project would extend the current hearing building of Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service’s Main Clinic to construct the dental and oral health facility.
“This will have major flow-on benefits across the community as it will increase access and opportunities for dental and oral health services and improve health benefits for the community; especially for the Aboriginal and Torres-strait Islander residents in the Katherine region,” Ms Price said.
Wurli Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation CEO Suzi Berto said this was an infrastructure project that Wurli has been planning for many years.
“The day we welcome our very first dental client at Wurli will be a historical day, a day to reflect and a day to celebrate the hard work of our Board of Directors, our Community and our People.
“Wurli takes this opportunity to thank the Hon John McVeigh, Senator Scullion and Ms Price for their support in assisting us to achieve this significant milestone,” Ms Berto said.
Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the project will deliver significant economic and social benefits to the community.
“Under round two of the Building Better Regions Fund – Infrastructure Projects stream, the Coalition Government is investing well over $200 million in 136 projects with a total leveraged project value of $459 million,” Dr McVeigh said.
“This means, in each successful community much anticipated local projects are receiving the funds needed to take a big idea and make it a reality.
“The Coalition has a plan for regional Australia and we are focused on getting it done. It’s a plan to create more jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities”.
“A further $200 million was announced in the 2018-19 Budget for a third round of the Building Better Regions Fund – a clear indication of the Coalition Government’s commitment to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.”
The second round of the Building Better Regions Fund, which includes the Community Investments stream and the Infrastructure Projects stream, is expected to create some 10,000 jobs from over 240 projects.
