The Leader of the Opposition, Bill Shorten, has done the right thing to pull a Labor jobs advertisement that portrays Australia as a country just made up of white Anglo-Saxons – but the question is why he or his party ever thought it was appropriate.
That Mr Shorten appeared in the advertisement and is the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders makes it all the more disappointing.
First Australians are an important part of the Coalition Government’s employment policies and the Coalition has delivered great results that Mr Shorten could learn from.
Since the Coalition took office in 2013, the programmes in my portfolio have resulted in more than 50,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jobs. This translates to almost 60 jobs every day.
I invite Mr Shorten to join me on a visit to any of the successful Indigenous businesses and organisations the Coalition Government is partnering with to get a better understanding of the importance of including Indigenous Australians in government employment programmes.
