Joint Media Release with Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government The Hon John McVeigh and Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari Jacinta Price
- 17 councils in Lingiari will receive a total of $3.9 million in grants
- Councils can spend their grants according to local priorities
- More than $2.4 billion is being provided to 546 councils around Australia this financial year
The Country Liberals have made the first quarterly payment of $3.9 million to local councils in Lingiari under the 2018-19 Financial Assistance Grant Programme.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion and CLP Candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, said local councils will receive a total of $3.9 million this financial year to support their local community.
“These grants can be used to help councils deliver infrastructure, health, recreation, environmental and employment projects,” Senator Scullion said.
Ms Price said this CLP funding will help support the delivery of essential services and local infrastructure for Territorians.
“This is even more critical in the face of the Gunner Government’s neglect of local government and Michael Gunner’s economic recklessness which is killing jobs and investment every single day in the Territory,” Ms Price said.
Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the program was a prime example of the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting the efforts of local government to deliver the services and facilities their communities need.
“Under the programme, the Government is providing local governments with a total of $2.4 billion in untied grants in 2018-19,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Councils are free to spend this untied funding based on their own local priorities including the infrastructure and services their community need.
“I am looking forward to seeing our local councils target local priorities with this funding, along with additional funding provided by the Coalition Government under the Roads to Recovery, Black Spot and Bridges Renewal programmes.”
