The Gunner Government’s shambolic handling of the delivery of Commonwealth funded houses in Minyerri has been exacerbated by Minister McCarthy’s focus on blame games rather than real action.
“It is unacceptable that Territorians are being asked to live next to a billabong without any shelter or access to basic facilities,” Minister Scullion said.
“Minister McCarthy’s comments that transitional housing is not covered by the Commonwealth funding does not pass the pub test and is a blatant lie. What pathetic excuse will this incompetent Minister come up with next week?
“The Commonwealth funds the Northern Territory Government for all capital work costs – that is why transitional housing has been delivered in other communities under the Giles Government and now the Gunner Government.
“If transitional housing is not covered under the National Partnership Agreement I ask Minister McCarthy what funding is he using to pay for the transitional housing that is supposedly on its way to Minyerri?
“It beggars belief that this embattled Minister would drop the ball on such a fundamental aspect of his own housing program and it raises serious questions about what other essential elements of the housing works programme the Gunner Government is cutting to try and reign in its out of control deficit?
“Last week I wrote to Michael Gunner seeking assurances that transitional housing would be provided to Minyerri and other communities receiving Commonwealth funded housing works.
“I look forward to receiving this advice and encourage Michael Gunner to work with the Commonwealth and the Northern Land Council to urgently resolve the crisis caused by Minister McCarthy.
