Joint Media Release with Minister for Employment, Michaelia Cash
Now is the time to take charge of your career and consider becoming your own boss, with greater Coalition Government support to encourage self-employment and entrepreneurship.
Minister for Employment, Michaelia Cash, said the expansion of the Government’s highly successful New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) and a number of other measures introduced late last year helped people wanting to turn their business idea into reality.
“Young people, especially, have so many new and exciting entrepreneurial ideas, but only a small number of them choose to pursue this path,” Minister Cash said.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said that recent changes to the eligibility criteria and the opening of new places in NEIS would provide even greater opportunity for young entrepreneurs.
“I have spoken to many businesses in the NT and it is clear that initiatives like the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme provide more opportunities for self-starters,” Senator Scullion said.
NEIS provider for Darwin and Alice Springs, My Pathway, said that the NEIS programme was an effective way to “jump start” small businesses.
“We have many capable and enthusiastic young entrepreneurs eager to share their business ideas. We began as a NEIS business ourselves nearly 25 years ago and now employ in excess of 900 people nationwide. We very strongly believe that the NEIS programme is a fantastic initiative which assists participants to get their business off the ground,” My Pathway’s National RTO Manager, Amanda Sophios, said.
The expansion of NEIS will help to create more opportunities for young people to be trained and mentored on starting their own business. The eligibility criteria for NEIS has also been broadened to allow people who are not in employment, education or training – including those who are not on income support – to access assistance.
An additional 2300 NEIS places per year bring the total number of places available annually to 8600.
