Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, has paid tribute to Mr Kalippa who passed away today on the Tiwi Islands.
Minister Scullion said Mr Kalippa devoted his life to improving outcomes for his people and community.
“Mr Kalippa was a true leader for Tiwi Islanders and all Territorians,” Minister Scullion said.
“As the inaugural Chairman of the Tiwi Land Council, Mr Kalippa played an integral role in establishing the region’s representative body and I applaud the ongoing leadership and contribution he provided to the organisation.
“As patriarch of the famous Rioli family, Mr Kalippa was integral to the establishment of Tiwi Bombers, the local AFL team, of which he became the inaugural life member in 2014.
“Mr Kalippa was a key promoter of the important work the club has played in youth engagement and substance misuse programmes.
“I acknowledge his robust and passionate leadership of his community – something amply demonstrated to me during our recent negotiations for a township lease at Pirlangimpi which I was pleased to have recently reached an in-principle agreement with traditional owners on.
“Mr Kalippa, as Chair of the Tiwi Plantations Corporation, also demonstrated his commitment to grow the economic opportunities for his community.
“He was at the forefront of many of the developments on the Tiwi Islands and was determined to provide a better life for his people from education, through his involvement in the Tiwi College, to the employment of local men and women.”
Minister Scullion extended his deepest condolences to Mr Kalippa’s family at this difficult time.
