Joint Media Release with Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson
Another chapter has been written for native title determination in Western Australia with the Federal Court handing down a landmark determination for the Mirning people.
The Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, and Member for O’Connor, Rick Wilson, today congratulated the Mirning people on the successful outcome of their campaign.
Today’s milestone determination covers more than 33,000 square kilometres of land – with a large portion of this land being granted exclusive possession, the highest form of native title that can be granted.
“I look forward to working with the traditional owners of their land to manage their land and pursue economic development and support better outcomes for their community,” Minister Scullion said.
“The Coalition Government recognises that it is important that it works with native title holders given the increasing number of determinations across Australia.
“That is why we have established a $20 million Prescribed Bodies Corporate Capability Development Fund – the first time funding has been directly allocated for the benefit of native title holders.”
Member for O’Connor, Rick Wilson, said this was a wonderful outcome for the Mirning people and is an important recognition of the native title holders’ ownership of land.
“Today’s determination is especially significant due to the culturally significant sites the land encompasses – with the picturesque Weebubie cave being just one.
“The Mirning people should be congratulated for their courage, patience and sheer determination.”
