The Northern Territory will benefit from today’s announcement of the multi-billion dollar Offshore Patrol Vessel project, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, announced.
Senator Scullion said the Royal Australian Navy’s 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels will be designed under a prime contract to Lürssen of Germany.
“The Government’s announcement about the Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessels will lead to up to 400 people directly employed and see many hundreds more jobs created across Australia in associated supply chains,” Senator Scullion said.
“I’m pleased that HMAS Coonawarra will see a share of a further $900 million which will be invested in wharfs and infrastructure upgrades with 6 of the 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels to be based at Coonawarra.”
“This announcement reinforces the benefits to Australia’s economy under the Government’s $90 billion Naval Shipbuilding program.
“Our nation stands to benefit immensely from the Government’s national shipbuilding endeavour, which includes construction of 21 Pacific Patrol Boats, 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels, 9 Future Frigates, and 12 Future Submarines.
“As a direct result of the actions of the Coalition Government, defence industry is fast becoming a pillar of our economy and I encourage Territory companies to find out how they might get involved.”
