PrintCrossin glosses over Labor broken promises
Northern Territory Senator Trish Crossin needs to explain why she has failed to deliver on a range of promises for the Territory, some pledged more than three years ago, Country Liberals Senator Nigel Scullion said today.
“A week ago Senator Crossin criticised our Federal colleague Natasha Griggs for holding the Government to account, saying Mrs Griggs didn’t understand the Parliamentary process or how election commitments are funded,” Senator Scullion said.
“Senator Crossin said election promises cannot be funded until after the Federal Budget is handed down for the following financial year, and that Labor has a history of delivering election commitments.
“Her comments so incensed a community member that he sent the Country Liberals a Labor press release from 2007 which promised to fix up Northern Territory roads with a $386 million investment.
“The list outlined promises which have not been delivered, including:
- A heavy vehicle bypass around Katherine;
- A rail overpass on the Stuart Highway south of Alice Springs and intersection improvements at the airport turnoff;
- A high level bridge over the King River and overtaking lanes; and
- Flood immunity improvements on the Stuart Highway at Gilbert Swamp.
“Thanks to Senator Crossin’s inability to encourage her Federal counterparts to deliver on their promises, Territory drivers continue to put up with broken windscreens and other mechanical problems, and being cut off from neighbouring communities for weeks at a time due to the poor condition of our roads.
“It is little wonder that the Member for Solomon is dubious about Labor’s most recent election commitments when they haven’t yet delivered on promises from 2007.”
