Labor’s Aboriginal jobs promises will not replace jobs lost in cattle industry
Aboriginal Territorians up until 4 weeks ago were working hard in the cattle industry. Today they must be shaking their heads over Trish Crossin and Labor’s priorities, said Senator Scullion today.
“While thousands of jobs are at risk or disappearing before our very eyes as a result of Labor’s ban on cattle exports, Trish Crossin asks a Dorothy dixer question to the Minister for Aboriginal employment about promised jobs.
“Aboriginal people had jobs that they liked in an industry that they helped build and Labor sent them to the dole queue.
“In their place Labor are patting each other on the back about some 50,000 jobs that have been promised for the future,” said Senator Scullion.
“There would be no need to find new jobs for thousands of people if the Labor government would stop taking jobs off them in the first place.
“As a Territorian, Senator Crossin should be embarrassed to have asked such an insensitive question.
“To then stand up and defend Labor’s bungling of the entire live export issue is simply beyond belief.
“The government is aware of abattoirs in Indonesia that meet all their requirements. The government is also aware of closed supply chains that monitor all cattle yet they still refuse to lift the ban.
Surely Labor can walk and chew gum at the same time by restarting exports to complying abattoirs and supply chains while working with Indonesian officials to bring the remainder up to acceptable standards.
“The Prime Minister must immediately intervene in the mess created by Senator Ludwig and lift the ban on live exports to complying abattoirs and Senator Crossin should start to stand up for her constituents rather that promoting feel good labor announcements or defending the indefensible.”
