Labor Senator for the Northern Territory, Nova Peris, should end any public uncertainty about her future and immediately confirm whether she will be contesting the federal election.
The people of the Northern Territory deserve to know whether media reports are accurate that she may be leaving politics to take up a position at the AFL.
Senator Peris could quickly end any uncertainty by denying she is interested in taking up a job at the AFL.
If Senator Peris is not standing for election, Labor needs to come clean and say who will be No 1 on its Senate ticket in the Northern Territory and whether there will be a democratic pre-selection process or just another captain’s pick.
If Senator Peris is not standing, she also needs to clarify when she knew that she was abandoning her constituents.
Did she know she was moving on when she rejected the Coalition’s Community Development Programme reforms and refused to listen to the aspirations of residents of remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who wanted to return to local control?
Senator Peris needs to come clean about her future and stop taking the residents of the Northern Territory for a ride.
