The Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, has disgracefully misled Northern Territory families about the Coalition Government’s funding for schools.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said instead of cutting funding, the Coalition’s funding to Territory schools would increase 3.6 per cent every year over the next decade.
“Mr Snowdon has rushed to put out a media release to whip up community concern about the Coalition’s support for Northern Territory schools,” Senator Scullion said.
“Mr Snowdon has absolutely no shame. This is the same person who went to the last election saying he wanted to sack the ‘yellow shirts’ who are helping to get more kids in remote communities to school every day.
“The Member for Lingiari should admit he didn’t bother to check his facts before issuing the release and apologise to all the parents of Northern Territory school children for misleading them and unnecessarily causing concern.
“The Coalition Government is keen to work with the Gunner Government to improve educational outcomes for Territory students – and would welcome Labor’s federal Territory representative putting politics aside to work in the best interests of Northern Territory students.
“As part the Coalition’s commitment, the Government will provide $4.8 billion to support Territory schools over ten years. In addition, there is a further $35.6 million for the Northern Territory to accelerate evidence-based reforms to improve outcomes for vulnerable students.
“The Coalition is also providing $287.1 million over seven years through the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Aboriginal Investment to improve educational outcomes for Territory students.
“The Gunner Government would know full well that our funding for Territory schools is increasing – and I challenge the Chief Minister to repudiate his federal colleague for misleading Territorians.”
