A Joint Counter Terrorism operation in Sydney last weekend disrupted an alleged terrorist plot to bring down an aircraft.
Comments by Sandra Nelson seeking to use this very serious national security issue for Territory Labor’s political gain are disgraceful. It is reasonable to ask whether Ms Nelson’s comments suggesting the Turnbull Government has engaged in a grand conspiracy are the views of the Gunner Government.
I am appalled a member of the Northern Territory Parliament would make political comments that downplay an alleged terrorist plot to carry out a mass casualty event on an aircraft leaving Australia.
I call on Michael Gunner to publicly condemn these comments and demand Ms Nelson withdraw the offensive remarks and apologise to the people of the Northern Territory that she is supposed to represent.
The number one priority of the Turnbull Government is to keep Australians safe. Our agencies, which are among the best in the world, have disrupted 13 terrorist plots in Australia since 2014. We will continue to work day and night to keep Australians safe.
This incident is subject to ongoing investigations and it would be inappropriate to comment further.
