Five hundred Territorians have lost their jobs in the last year under the economic ineptitude of the Gunner Government, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, said.
“Sadly, 500 Territorians lost their job in the 12 months to August 2018 under the hopeless economic leadership of Chief Minister Michael Gunner,” Senator Scullion said.
“One hundred Territorians were put out of work during the month of August this year alone, according to the latest ABS Labour Force Survey data for August 2018.
“That is 500 more workers out of a job and 500 Territory households that have lost an income earner and 500 more families finding it harder to make ends meet every week.
“The out of touch Chief Minister may well dismiss these figures but the reality is his economic recklessness is having a real impact on everyday Territorians.
“The time for talk is over and it is time to get the Territory working again as it was under the CLP.
“Labor promised it would create 14,000 jobs per year but these latest figures prove this is a worthless promise from this Labor Chief Minister.
“With record lows of business confidence the Gunner Government has abjectly failed to inspire confidence and is driving investment away from the Territory. After finally ending its fracking ban that killed investment and then tying the gas industry up in regulation and red tape; they are planning the world’s worst mining tax that threatens $6 billion of investment and 4,000 jobs.
“Unfortunately for Territorians, Labor’s job-killing and economy-wrecking agenda to halt the gas industry and failure to stand up for our live exporters to mention just a few, is having exactly its predicted effect. These figures show Labor has absolutely no credibility when it comes to economic management.
“The NT has had two periods of consecutive falling State Final Demand indicating that the local economy is in recession, and the decline is accelerating.
“The Gunner Government has produced a record deficit and is leaving Territorians with record debt that the rapidly declining population, via our children and grandchildren who remain here, will be paying off for years.”
At a federal level, more than 1.1 million jobs have been created since the Liberal and Nationals Government came into office in 2013.
“There are more Australians in work than ever before, and more Australians in full-time work than ever before. But the Gunner Government’s inept economic management is stifling the NT economy leading to many Territorians out of job and looking for work during a recession Michael Gunner created.”
“Without a strong economy, the Northern Territory won’t have the capacity to deliver the jobs and opportunities we need, not only now but for our children and grandchildren. Sadly, this is what we have been seeing happen under the Gunner Labor Government and it is past time for Michael Gunner to stand aside and let adults make the decisions the Territory needs.
“Our plan for a national stronger economy is working, but there is more work to do. Federal Labor doesn’t have a plan to manage the Australia’s economy, only a plan for $200 billion worth of higher taxes which would hurt our economy and leave Territorians worse off.”
