Joint Media Release with Country Liberals Candidate for Lingiari Jacinta Nampijinpa Price
Bathurst Island residents and businesses will benefit from the upgrade of Wurrumiyanga Airstrip, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, and CLP Candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, announced.
“This is terrific news for Bathurst Island residents who will benefit from the Coalition Government’s continued commitment to invest in vital infrastructure in remote parts of the Northern Territory,” Senator Scullion said.
$1.5 million in Commonwealth funding was provided for the $9 million upgrade to reconstruct the Wurrumiyanga runway and apron pavements and extend the length of the runway to 1600m.
“Extending the length of the Wurrumiyanga runway to 1600 metres will help ensure that this airstrip can meet the needs of people on Bathurst Island for years to come.”
Ms Price said this important project would not have been possible without the funding the Country Liberals delivered.
“Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island is the largest community on the Tiwi islands and this upgraded airstrip will open up further opportunities for locals, especially in tourism and industry.
“Funded under the Government’s Remote Airstrip Upgrade Programme, the upgrades at the Wurrumiyanga airstrip will ensure continued access to essential, potentially lifesaving, health care as well as fresh food, mail services and access to employment and education opportunities.
“With the Gunner Government’s failure to deliver vital infrastructure, Territorians will not be surprised that it is the CLP that can manage the economy, guarantee essential services such as infrastructure while getting the budget back into surplus, giving hard working Australians tax relief and all while paying down Labor’s debt.”
The $9 million project, jointly funded by both the Australian and Northern Territory Governments, supported over 85 jobs, including five local employees and has engaged local Aboriginal business Tiwi Enterprises as a subcontractor.
