Labor MP Warren Snowdon was one of 70 MPs who voted this week for Peter Slipper to remain as Speaker, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said.
“Despite the most damning text messages, Mr Snowdon chose to support Peter Slipper – and effectively endorsed Mr Slipper for the highest office in the Parliament of Australia,” Senator Scullion said.
“In supporting Peter Slipper Mr Snowdon put his own political survival and the survival of the government ahead of his duty to do the right thing by the people of Lingiari.
“Unfortunately this is not the first time Mr Snowdon has put the Labor party ahead of the people of Lingiari.
“Mr Snowdon supported the live exports ban, voted to lock up vast areas of NT waters in a marine park, voted for the carbon tax, voted to cut the Private Health Insurance Rebate from thousands of local families and this week voted for Peter Slipper to remain as Speaker.
“When Mr Snowdon gets to Canberra, he forgets the people of Lingiari.
“Mr Snowdon has lost touch with the community.
“When I travel around Lingiari and around the Territory, people are telling me they are concerned about the carbon tax, concerned about the pressures on small business and concerned about jobs.
“Yet Mr Snowdon continues to vote for Labor’s attack on ordinary families by supporting the live exports ban, voting for marine parks, voting for the carbon tax and changes to the Private Health Insurance Rebate,” Senator Scullion said.
