Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion has paid tribute to Ms Yarmirr, who passed away recently.
“Ms Yarmirr was a proud advocate who achieved much for her people on Croker Island and leaves a lasting legacy for her clan in the Croker Island area,” Senator Scullion said.
“I had the distinct honor and privilege of working closely with her when I was chairman of the Northern Territory Seafood Council while she fought successfully for recognition of native title sea rights.
“As a mark of her foresight and innovative strong leadership, she worked with pearling companies to ensure traditional owners were at the centre of plans to farm the pearls around Croker Island.
“That was one of many achievements for a respected elder and fierce advocate for her people, who worked tirelessly for decades to improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
“She was a strong leader for her people, as while also an elder she was a long serving member of the Northern Land Council, and West Arnhem Shire Deputy Mayor.
“I extend my sincere condolences to her family and her friends. We have lost a great Australian and a personal friend of mine before her time,” Senator Scullion said.
