More communities across northern Australia will have access to low aromatic unleaded fuel with the opening of a bulk storage tank in Darwin today.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said the Australian Government has provided oil and natural gas-related products company Vopak with about $16 million to establish the tank, as part of the Government’s Petrol Sniffing Strategy in northern Australia.
“The Government is putting its money into this giant tank because low aromatic fuel is part of a proven strategy to combat the use of regular unleaded petrol for sniffing and getting high,” Minister Scullion said.
“I have seen first-hand the problems that petrol sniffing can cause. That’s why the Government is working so hard to reduce the devastating effects of petrol sniffing in communities across northern Australia.”
Australian corporations have also pledged to do their part in adopting low aromatic unleaded fuel where it is available.
Chief Minister Adam Giles on behalf of the Northern Territory Government, AFL NT, Nitmiluk Tours, the Arnhem Land Progress Association, the Amateur Fishing Association of the NT and Scott Hammet Building and Carpentry all signed covenants with the Australian Government as part of the launch.
“I congratulate, and thank, these organisations who have agreed to use low aromatic unleaded fuel in their vehicles where it is available,” Minister Scullion said.
“We need to get the message out not only to all Territorians, but also to tourists, that using low aromatic unleaded fuel will help the communities they visit; that it costs the same and is just as good for your engine and car.
“Together we can make a real difference in tackling the scourge of petrol sniffing in our communities.”
The regions around Katherine will now receive low aromatic unleaded fuel supplied from the new Darwin storage facility.
Low aromatic unleaded fuel is already available across parts of regional and remote Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia.
