A Coalition Government will not change the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Rights Act and will focus on Indigenous economic development, Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion and candidate for Lingiari Tina MacFarlane said.
“We met with the Central Land Council (CLC) today at Harts Range, near Alice Springs, and some CLC members raised concerns, springing from scaremongering by Warren Snowdon and Labor that the Coalition would take land off them,” Senator Scullion said.
“That is completely false and I confirmed that the Coalition has no plans to change, amend or review the Aboriginal Land Rights Act if we win Government.
“My focus is on land tenure reform, economic development and local decision-making. All of this is provided for under the 2006 Howard Government amendments to the NT Land Rights Act so no changes are needed.
“Labor never had the heart to realise the potential of the 2006 amendments.
