Port Adelaide players will act as mentors to Indigenous students in the Barkly region with Federal Government funding for a program to assist students make smart life choices.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, said $750,000 over 3 years has been made available through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) grant round for the WillPOWER Programme for Aboriginal students in Years 6 – 9 at Elliot School, Ali Curung School, Tennant Creek Primary School and Tennant Creek High School.
“The WillPOWER Programme encourages students to tap into their WillPOWER both mentally and physically through making smart choices in life through guided discussion,” Minister Scullion said.
“Players and staff from Port Adelaide Football Club will use real life experiences to connect with students and engage them in various topics including health and nutrition, violence and respect, social media and cyber bullying.
“The programme encourages school attendance and to complete the tasks under the WillPOWER programme to participate in football carnivals with the Port Adelaide players,” Minister Scullion said.
Port Adelaide Football Club CEO, Keith Thomas, said the club was delighted to partner with the Commonwealth Government to deliver this important programme.
“Football has a powerful influence on young people, and is extremely popular in the Barkly Region. We believe that our players are outstanding role models capable of inspiring hope and change in the students,” he said.
“We look forward to working with local community leaders to ensure that this funding delivers great change to the communities and specifically to the young people in the Barkly Region.”
Minister Scullion said getting kids to school continues to be a top priority for the Federal Government.
“Linking one of the Territory’s most popular sports, AFL, with such a programme to assist students will encourage not only attendance but help them make good decisions in life,” Minister Scullion said.
