The Federal and Territory Governments have activated a range of assistance for Northern Territory residents affected by Tropical Cyclones Nathan and Lam.
This assistance has been comprehensive and includes assisting in the repair of housing as well as financial and counselling assistance for individuals.
It’s clear that comments made this morning by Senator Peris, highlight her misunderstanding of the recovery efforts.
State and Territory Governments have constitutional responsibility for emergency management, which is why all states fund disaster assistance in the first instance.
Federal funds are guaranteed when local expenditure reaches a certain threshold over a financial year.
This arrangement gives the states the security to be able to activate local disaster assistance immediately, with the certainty of knowing that federal assistance will kick-in if the financial impact on the state is significant.
In addition to this joint federal-territory assistance, the Commonwealth has also provided a range of further assistance, including practical planning and logistics support from disaster specialists, and financial support packages.
